Identity theft is one of the most insidious kinds of theft there is. It can happen without the victim even knowing it. By following a few personal data security tips, you can protect yourself from this kind of theft.
Protect Your Mail
Your postal mail contains some of the most personal data that needs security. It is ironic that some of the most secret personal data around sits in an unlocked compartment just inches away from a door that has two or more deadbolts and other types of security locks. Get a locking mailbox or, even better, a post office box where the post office will hold your mail for you. Use a password to protect anyone from gaining access to your computer's hard drive. Guard your passwords zealously. Do not leave your computer unattended, even for a few minutes, and even at home. Do not answer suspicious email; delete it without opening it.
Protect Your Credit
Monitor your credit rating with vigilance. Get regular copies of your credit report, and subscribe to credit monitoring services that will notify you when someone tries to get credit in your name.
